You've been in that room. The data is on the table. The conversation hasn't started. And somehow ..... you already know how this is going to go!
That instinct isn't irrational. It's something far more interesting.
Two directors. Same boardroom. Same data. Same pressure. One walks in expecting a solvable problem. The other expects a crisis.
Both experiences feel completely real, and both get confirmed by everything that follows.
Because the brain doesn't wait for evidence before deciding what kind of moment this is. It arrives with a belief already formed. That belief shapes what you notice, how the room feels, which options seem visible, and the story you tell yourself afterwards about why you decided what you did.
That loop is always running .... in me, you and in every leader we know.
And here is the part that far too many who are trusted with leadership miss.
You cannot force your way out of that loop. The harder you try to think clearly under pressure, the more the loop tightens. It works exactly like trying to fall asleep; the moment it becomes an effort, it moves further away. Clarity, like sleep, cannot be constructed; it may/will-only consurge when the conditions are right.
Learning what those conditions are, and how to create them deliberately, is the work I do.
After 30 years as a director, founder and investor, and through hundreds of conversations with leaders navigating genuine uncertainty, I've learned that the ones who find clarity fastest aren't the ones who get it right. Speed is not winning.
Those who do the best in the long run are those whom I have helped learn what conditions allow better thinking to emerge, for themselves and their team. And, of course, has someone in their corner who knows how to create them.
My book Decision Making in Uncertain Times is where the foundation lives and this is supported by my updated thinking at Open Governance
